La Pastelería Madrid: Tradition in the Historic Center

Pastelería Madrid is one of the special places in the Historic Center of Mexico City. In addition to well-known names like La Vasconia or La Ideal, which stand out in the ranking of legendary dessert places according to Taste Atlas, Pastelería Madrid has earned a spot in the top 5.

This bakery has an interesting history, dating back to 1939 when it first opened on February 5th Street. Founded by Spanish immigrants, they drew inspiration from their homeland for the name and adopted the Cibeles fountain as their logo.

Inside Pastelería Madrid, elements transport you to the 1980s, with a gallery of photographs and a selection of delicious sweet breads, as well as varied breakfasts that include enchiladas, chilaquiles, tacos, and aguas frescas.

The bakery was a pioneer in introducing the self-service system in the 1950s and 1960s, when they used to serve white bread and sweet bread through a counter. Over the years, a restaurant was opened in the bakery that continues to operate in both locations.

As for its culinary offerings, Pastelería Madrid provides a wide variety of sweet breads, cakes, pies, tamales, jellies, among others, at affordable prices. In its restaurant, different dishes can be enjoyed such as guisado tacos, tortas, aguas frescas, enchiladas, chilaquiles, huevos motuleños, and more, with prices ranging from 34 to 130 pesos.

Although Pastelería Madrid does not have social media or an official website, it remains true to its long tradition in its two original branches. Located at the addresses of Calle 5 de Febrero and República de Uruguay, this century-old bakery awaits its customers with traditional treats and an atmosphere that evokes the charm of yesteryear. Opening hours vary, but they usually open early in the morning until late at night.
